Amazing fact: Portland, Oregon has the most world-class basketball courts on earth.

In 2002, Nike, Inc. and the City of Portland's Bureau of Parks & Recreation, coordinated by Portland Parks Foundation, teamed up to recycle 170,000 pairs of used athletic shoes into new surfaces for every outdoor basketball court in the city--96 of them. Nike has also pledged to maintain all of the courts through 2017, part of its more than $2 million gift to the city.
