Restore Historic Squares Fund: Lownsdale and Chapman Squares

Post-encampment Lownsdale Square (November 18, 2011).

Citizens from all walks of life are uniting to share their love of Portland’s historic squares through a donation to the Restore our Historic Squares Fund to help restore and reinvigorate two of the most historically and culturally significant parks in Portland: Lownsdale and Chapman Squares.

Portland Parks Foundation recognizes that our historic squares are a vital public commons: enjoyed and needed for over 140 years by citizens from all walks of life. The Squares are one of the greatest expressions of how Portland cares for its people. Our citizens have a great history of helping parks and people in times of need. This is a critical time both to pitch in and express your dedication to these historic commons at the center of a remarkable—yet fragile—parks system.

The City of Portland is undergoing an assessment of the impacts of recent camping on the squares, and critically important restoration work. The initial cost estimate for restoration is between $50,000 and $100,000.
