A major benefactor to Portland's parks is announced

Portland Parks Foundation had the pleasure of announcing an extraordinary donation. At City Hall on Wednesday, April 30, Executive Director Linda Laviolette made it known that Portland businessman Jordan D. Schnitzer had contributed nearly $2 million for the completion of a park at what is currently known as South Park Block 5 in downtown Portland.

Developer Tom Moyer donated the land and $1 million toward creation of the park. When it became apparent that there would be a shortfall of funds to complete the park as envisioned, the city turned to Portland Parks Foundation for help. Linda called Board member Kelsey Green Grout, and asked her if she knew someone who could help. Kelsey, who had grown up with Jordan Schnitzer and knew his devotion to Portland and its parks, made the call. Jordan's response was immediate and positive. His only proviso was that he remain anonymous for a time so not to detract from Moyer's generosity.

After his participation was announced, Jordan proposed a name for the new park: "The Simon and Helen Director Park," to honor his maternal grandparents, who came to Portland from Russia and Poland at the turn of the century.

The park will be a beautiful urban plaza, paved with honey-colored granite, and featuring a café with a dramatic glass canopy, an amphitheater and a water feature. It promises to be a major gathering place for activities at any time of year, night and day.
